Longtime Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was introduced as a member of the Capitals on Thursday via Zoom. The 43 year old was surprisingly candid about his negotiations with the B's, noting that it was made clear he would be used in a reserve role if he returned to Boston.
“I just felt what was presented to me and what conditions were attached to it, I just felt I had more to offer.”
Despite his decision to leave, Chara gave GM Don Sweeney “a lot of credit” for his communication..
“it’s been a long process... I’ve been going through some difficult decisions and different options.”
Chara says he's looking forward to joining his new team and is already in Washington, following protocols and quarantining.
“I definitely see a new opportunity, new challenges. But I’m extremely motivated... it’s something I had to try.”
As for not having to defend Alex Ovechkin anymore,
“I think we all know Alex is a very, very talented player... he’s a pure goal scorer and future Hall of Famer.”
Chara had served as captain of the Bruins since 2006. He thinks Patrice Bergeron should be next in line.
“absolutely no question.... he’s obviously well-proven in a crunch time to deliver and the impact he has on the players, teammates, coaches fans is tremendous.”
And though he's moving down the coast, Big Zee's heart remains with Boston.
“I wanna thank all the fans. They show so much passion ... and so much support. I’ll always be very proud to call Boston my home.”
